Apple fan: Thousands of miles to be a few hours early

From "iPhone 14: India man flies to Dubai to buy Apple gadget early" posted Tuesday by BBC News:

A man from the southern Indian state of Kerala travelled thousands of miles to Dubai to buy the latest iPhone, hours before it went on sale in India.

Dheeraj Palliyil flew abroad to buy the iPhone 14 Pro last week in a bid to become one of the first few in the world to own the new phone.

He spent 40,000 rupees ($500; £439) on his tickets, and another 129,000 rupees to buy the new model...

Mr Palliyil, 28, is no stranger to the hype - this is the fourth time that he has travelled to Dubai just to buy the phone ahead of others.

Mr Palliyil, a cinematographer and a businessman, says he has always been a technology enthusiast and is greatly inspired by Steve Jobs, the former CEO of Apple who died in 2011.

"This is my way of commemorating his work," he adds...

The iPhone is arguably one of the most coveted smartphones in the world.

My take: "Arguably"?

According to a friend, recently returned from a long family visit in India, the Pro models (then 13 Pro) were must-haves. No doubt she represents an upper income bracket.

In India and other emerging economies, iPhones offer immense utility, while conferring status, to a growing middle and upper class.

We have a lot to learn…

Yes, we do, even among our liberals.

Interesting observation. In the developing world, status is very important (especially in the caste system of India )! High end watches, jewelry are also treasured.

In USA after 250+ years of democracy we are still trying to figure out inclusion for black and latino voters. During first few months of coming to USA, I noticed the race based segregated society. Fast forward 25+ years, I have witnessed more racial divide in our country USA. We have a lot to learn from India, which is celebrating 75th year of independence from British. The best part India has figured out how to conduct free and fair elections for all its 1billion+ citizens. On Friday, 2 September India has overtaken the United Kingdom in becoming the world’s fifth largest economy. My prediction is if the current PM Mr Modi is elected for the 3rd term, then India might become the 3rd largest economy in the world before 2035.

Sounds like a few people in India have money to burn. And this year there were more than a few stories about vendors in China selling IPhones for hundreds of dollars more than list.

  4. India’s still supports Russia in the face of their Ukrainian slaughter and land-grab. Apple’s presence there is promising but nascent and tenuous. I prefer Vietnam production prospects right now, even if Communist rule persists.
Modi seemed to chastise Putin recently but he loves that discounted Sakhalin crude oil.
Modi tolerates & encourages anti-Muslim sentiment & laws. India is the world’s largest democracy but it has a long way to go in many areas. GDP per capita was $2,000 in 2020. Just about twice the price of a new iPhone.

“Europe has to grow out of the mindset that its problems are the world’s problems but the world’s problems are not Europe’s problems” this statement is by the India External minister in Europe. Based on your text, I have concluded that you are completely mis-guided about India and Mr Modi treatment of Muslims in India. It is expected because you are getting your news from the USA media. The same USA media which didn’t expect the India will survive the pandemic in 2020. The same USA media which played key role in concluding that the WMD exist in the Iraq. The same USA media which has not understood the company like Apple and its contribution to economy and humanity. The Apple has invested significant time and energy to start its operations in India. The quality and quantity of labor, available in India is comparable to China. Let us wait until Mr Modi elected for 3rd term, to see how soon India economy ranks 3rd. Let’s not forget that our country USA has lot of work to do to take care of racial inequality in our own society.
