Apple lays off 100

From Mark Gurman's "Apple Lays Off Recruiters as Part of Its Slowdown in Hiring" posted Monday on the Bloomberg:

Apple Inc. laid off many of its contract-based recruiters in the past week, part of a push to rein in the tech giant’s hiring and spending, according to people with knowledge of the matter.

About 100 contract workers were let go in a rare move for the world’s most valuable company, said the people, who asked not to be identified because the situation is private. The recruiters were responsible for hiring new employees for Apple, and the cuts underscore that a slowdown is underway at the company.

Workers laid off were told the cuts were made due to changes in Apple’s current business needs. Bloomberg first reported last month that the company was decelerating hiring after years of staffing up, joining many tech companies in hitting the brakes. Chief Executive Officer Tim Cook confirmed during Apple’s earnings conference call that the company would be more “deliberate” in its spending -- even as it keeps investing in some areas.

“We believe in investing through the downturn,” Cook told analysts. “And so we’ll continue to hire people and invest in areas, but we are being more deliberate in doing so in recognition of the realities of the environment.”

Apple is still retaining recruiters who are full-time employees, and not all of its contractors were fired as part of the move...

The move to lay off workers is unusual for the Cupertino, California-based technology giant, which employs more than 150,000 people. But it’s far from alone in taking such a step. In recent months, Meta Platforms Inc., Tesla Inc., Microsoft Corp., Inc. and Oracle Corp. have all eliminated jobs in the face of a tech spending slowdown.

My take: Firing the folks you hired to recruit new hires is a sure way to reduce headcount.


  1. The producers of Apple TV+ programs certainly appear to be doing some hiring. The cadre of 3rd party app developers earning $ via App Store is surely growing.
    This layoff lights a subtle fire under those existing Apple employees who do not want to return to the mother ship.

    Concern? Yes, Alarm? No.

    While this news is non-trivial, Companies use contract workers precisely because they can be let go easily. Since recruiters tend to specialize in certain areas, the cuts may reflect changes in focus. With nearly all other leading tech companies cutting tech workers, Apple may not need as many recruiters to meet their hiring goals.

    Or perhaps this is an outgrowth of the “Great Resignation” that has turned out to bite many people in the a$$. Hence, Apple doesn’t need extra personnel to recruit as they’re begging for a job after their dream start up that: “Made their heart sing” went away after all that excess liquidity started to dry up and go away with the arrival of record inflation and the Fed raising rates!

      That’s smart. Use flex labor for short term demand.

    They are 20 open positions in Apple in the US for those with HR experience. Laying off 100 is only meaningful if we know the actual size of HR.

    My first thought was, how many did they have to begin with.

    The article is not clear if they are reducing headcount, or just not increasing as much. Big difference.

    And that’s the main question. Is Apple’s headcount actually shrinking, or still getting larger (just not as fast), or maintaining (only need to recruit replacements). Show me an article that answers those questions and you’ve got my attention.

    PS: Head hunters are only necessary if people are not knocking on your door. Is the number of ‘good’ applications increasing or decreasing?

      Considering the jobs and employees being shed by other tech companies worldwide, it’s very likely job applications will rise at Apple for whatever jobs they post. The quality of applicants may rise because many will come with job experience and documentable skills and achievements. Apple can afford to review these applications critically and “deliberately”. The pendulum may be swinging back towards an employer’s market in this particular sector.

      I agree with Rod and Bart. 100 employees in an organization of Apple’s size does not seem like a large number to me, and at least at my company, we are freezing most hiring, so recruiters are not a resource we need. I also think there are plenty of people on the sidelines looking for work, so a company’s job isn’t so much to find or steal them as to pick through the piles of resumes.

      That’s my conservative point of view. From a people point of view I find it unfortunate. I just looked up an old LinkedIn contact who used to do technical recruiting for Apple out of Austin. She’s now working for Tesla Giga in a similar role, a very recent relocation.
