Another awards show, another Apple TV+ sweep

From William Gallagher's "'Severance' and 'Ted Lasso' clean up at the Hollywood Critics awards" posted Monday:

Having received a record number of nominations at the Hollywood Critics Association TV Awards, Apple TV+ took home seven wins, including Best Drama and Best Comedy.

Apple TV+ earned a record 53 nominations in the awards, and was presented with 7 wins at the ceremony at the Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles on Sunday, August [14].

"Apple TV+ today was recognized as the most-winning streaming service by the Hollywood Critics Association Streaming TV Awards," announced Apple, "scoring seven wins including Best Drama 'Severance' and Best Comedy 'Ted Lasso.'"

The wins were:

    • Best Streaming Series, Drama: Severance
    • Best Actress in a Streaming Series, Drama: Britt Lower for Severance
    • Best Supporting Actor in a Streaming Series, Drama: John Turturro for Severance
    • Best Writing in a Streaming Series, Drama: Dan Erikson for Severance: The Way We Are
    • Best Directing in a Streaming Series, Drama: Ben Stiller for Severance: The Way We Are
    • Best Streaming Series, Comedy: Ted Lasso
    • Best Supporting Actor in a Streaming Series, Comedy: Brett Goldstein for Ted Lasso

The best comedy award for "Ted Lasso" makes it what Apple describes as "the only back-to-back HCA TV Award win across all platforms." It was also a second consecutive win for Goldstein.

My take: Spent a bachelor weekend binging Black Bird, figuring my wife wouldn't go for it. Not a prize-winner, but a strong 6-part series.

Quality, not quantity. The Apple way.

What happens to Apple’s revenue and earnings when quantity titles/subscriptions catches up with competing streamers, and Apple raises prices by $1.00/month?

    • By then it’l be part of your CarPlay AEV package, Gregg. Rather than looking out the windshield for moose you’ll have all that extra time to watch TV!
Seriously, Apple pricing moves have been effective. The European football deal is opening up Apple’s streaming services on many platforms, raising awareness globally. Once they close the NFL deal Apple TV+ starts to accelerate above other key streamers. Then they close on DirecTV’s satellites or launch their own.

        Why would Apple want DirectTV?

        August 15, 2022
        • Subscriber base can grow organically or sometimes be acquired.
To expand Apple TV+ offerings they can build their own programming library, acquire programming rights or a firm that already holds certain programming rights. DirectTV is one of many choices however they declined to renew NFL.
Satellite communication is growing more important each year. It is a cost-effective way to provide a reliable network to a billion people in rural, remote locations. It can leapfrog censorious regimes.
It is weather-resistant, compared to cell towers in an increasingly turbulent atmosphere. Admittedly it goes out temporarily during storms but it does not require rebuilding after a Cat 5 hurricane when the satellite receiver is part of the phone in your pocket. Littering space with microsats is an issue. Starlink, a stepping stone.

  2. If you locate Black Bird In IMDB besides the 8.3 rating The More Like This You might also Like section has 7 Apple TV+ choices among many streaming platforms. This is true of all programming but not so subtly promotes streaming through Apple TV+.
I’m not logged in to IMDB and usually search pre-1970 films I screen. I am enjoying Apple TV+ programming (Luck film right now) via free promos on all the various new Apple devices where I contribute.

Slight typo in the original linked AppleInsider article, the awards presentation was on August 14, not August 4.

Here’s the summary list of nominations from an earlier AppleInsider article:

It’s picked up nominations for Best Streaming Series, Best Actor for Jason Sudeikis, Best Supporting Actress for Hannah Waddingham and Juno Temple, Best Supporting Actor for Brett Goldstein, Nick Mohammed, and Toheeb Jimoh, plus four writing and directing nominations.

More broadly, Apple had three series nominated for Best Streaming Series, Drama, including “The Morning Show,” “Pachinko,” and “Severance.”

It picked up four nominations for Best Streaming Series, Comedy, with “The Afterparty,” “Dickinson,” “Shmigadoon!” and “Ted Lasso.”

The list is rather long and can be viewed on Apple’s Apple TV+ press site.”
