I’m quite comfortable with Apple under Jobs, and now Tim Cook, to decide what’s in the best interest of the company and shareholders long term.
And apparently Mr. Cybart is as confused as me. He mentioned Mr. Musk’s earlier tweet about how he wanted to sell Apple Tesla, and that Mr. Cook didn’t respond. (Did Mr. Musk tweet his offer? What is Mr. Cook’s side of the story? Will any of this be answered in this interview? Tune in….)
“…known and existing battery technology”? Really, Mr. Ritchie? Apple can’t possibly be looking at a different and unique approach to this “existing technology”? Pull the other one.
Mr. Sybart sees Mr. Musk’s tweet as a kind of jab at Cook and Apple in general. So do I. It’s a kind of “this is my turf” response. And yet – Mr. Musk has always been “okay” with competition in the EV market.
So what is going on here? Is Mr. Musk sensing a potential existential threat? And what’s it a threat to? Tesla – or Mr. Musk’s ego?
I’d lay odds it’s the latter.
For a long time now I’ve been pointing at Apple’s manufacturing base as a big part of the key to Apple’s success. And somewhere in the interview someone, I think Mr. Cybart, pointed out that, for Tesla, getting the manufacturing just right has been a real struggle for Mr. Musk. It’s not going to be a slam dunk for Apple, either, but they’ve been at this a very long time now, and they literally have the best guy to pull it off at the very top of the company.
Wouldn’t Mr. Musk give his eye teeth to have a Tim Cook on his side right about now? And maybe that’s what’s really got him worried; Apple has their Tim Cook. Unfortunately for him, dissing Tim Cook like he just did is almost certainly the worst possible move he could have made.
AND, as he notes, it avoids you tube. Winner!
TWITTER IS AN ABOMINATION, and these kinds of discussions about ‘Tweetstorms’ and ‘Twitter strategies’ just reinforces my totally negative impression of Twitter. YMMV.
(Twitter is all about throwing soundbites, not about actual informed discussion.)
