Apple hopes to grow iPhone market share in India with free AirPods

apple india free airpodsFrom The Times of India’s “This is Apple’s Diwali ‘gift’ to iPhone 11 buyers in India” posted Saturday:

Apple will be offering free AirPods to iPhone 11 buyers who shop from the online India Apple store or by simply visiting Apple’s website. The Diwali offer will start from October 11. There may be some fine print which Apple is yet to disclose but this offer will be for a limited time. What buyers will also get are engravings that Apple does exclusively on the AirPods, iPad and Apple Pencil. So, if you buy the iPhone 11, you can get free engraving on the AirPod.

My take: Diwali marks the start of a traditional Hindu five-day shopping spree, and free AirPods ought to make an attractive sweetener.

Apple needs to have available a hefty supply of iPhone 11s not just for India, but for the USA. While the iPhone 12 will be in high demand, so will the iPhone 11.

Many individuals do not have access to 5G and will not have access for several years. Take my county of 1,400 square miles with approximately 100,000 population. Most of the entire state lacks the infrastructure for 5G and consumers know that infrastructure will not be in place for several years. Even in the larger megalopolises such as Dallas, New Orleans, Jackson, Mississippi and Memphis Tennessee the disbursement of 5G infrastructure outside the CBD is still far off and more folk are working from anywhere (mostly in the suburbs). Suburbs are not where the carriers are targeting 5G now.

In our county we still lack comprehensive 4G network. This especially is true in more rural areas. What I am hearing are individuals wanting to upgrade to the lower priced iPhone 11 models and then upgrade to 5G several years from now when the 5G infrastructure is better established.

In summary, Apple needs to have a hefty supply of iPhone 11 models on hand to sell.

It’s a good thesis, Jerry, so props for that.

      Dare I ask which county?

I live about 3 miles from Dallas CBD, so I am optimistic that AT&T will get me covered at home pretty soon.

I also look forward to spending a comfortable fall evening inspecting their new plaza downtown. I’ve driven by it, but not yet set foot inside it. It looks pretty fantastic.
