Apple-Google duopoly: The UK bares its toothlessness

From "CMA plans market investigation into mobile browsers and cloud gaming" posted Friday by the Competition and Markets Authority on UK.Gov:

The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) is consulting on the launch of a market investigation into Apple and Google’s market power in mobile browsers and Apple’s restrictions on cloud gaming through its App Store. In parallel, it is also taking enforcement action against Google in relation to its app store payment practices.

This follows a year-long study of the companies’ mobile ecosystems, the final report of which has been published today. The study found that Apple and Google have an effective duopoly on mobile ecosystems that allows them to exercise a stranglehold over these markets, which include operating systems, app stores and web browsers on mobile devices.

Without interventions, both companies are likely to maintain, and even strengthen, their grip over the sector, further restricting competition and limiting incentives for innovators.

While the report identified a range of potential interventions across these ecosystems, the CMA has looked at where it can take immediate targeted action to tackle these problems using its current powers. As a result, the CMA is now consulting on making a market investigation reference into mobile browsers and access to cloud gaming on mobile devices.

My take: They investigate for a year and the best they can do is start "consulting on making a market investigation reference into mobile browsers and access to cloud gaming on mobile devices"?

    ANAL, but Wikipedia says; “Holding a dominant position or a monopoly in a market is often not illegal in itself, however certain categories of behavior can be considered abusive and therefore incur legal sanctions when business is dominant.”

    Maybe the UK’s CMA is having trouble finding abusive behavior.

    Make Apple and Google and Microsoft allow “competitive” operating systems on their hardware! Problem solved! 🙂

      Brilliant.

      A 10 second search found a list of 10 open source OS’s that can run on iPhone.

      Of course you’d lose most of the value of an iPhone.

    @PED: Love the Photo!

    Andrea Coscelli and Margrethe Vestager are the equivalent of: “The Three Stooges!” These two Dopes couldn’t distinguish an Apple from a kumquat and whoever put them in charge of anything beyond counting paper clips needs to be terminated immediately. Vestager has a hate for Apple that rivals a form of PTSD that must be included in the next edition of the DSM-V. I’m looking forward to the final ruling of the EU’s Highest Court coming perhaps later this year on Vestager’s claim that she ought to be able to dictate to Ireland on how to implement their corporate tax policies.

    Coscelli seems to be either a clone or a die hard fan of Vestager. Both of which are equally disturbing. Somewhat akin to a teeny bopper fanatic of Brittany Spears or Justin Bieber. England should have jettisoned her back in 2016 with Brexit!
