Apple news: Ming-Chi Kuo on Wednesday, Mark Gurman on Friday

The iPhone is getting a USB-C port, according to Apple's top two rumor mongers.

From Twitter:

From Bloomberg's

Apple Inc. is testing future iPhone models that replace the current Lightning charging port with the more prevalent USB-C connector, according to people with knowledge of the situation, a move that could help the company conform with looming European regulations.

My take: That's how the news flows. Gurman's story ended up topping Techmeme.

I don’t understand the part about it depending on iOS support. My iPad has a USB-C port so getting it to work in an iPhone shouldn’t be an issue.

I think he was referencing whether it would improve transfer/charging speeds.
MY hope is that it improves reliability. My experience says Lightning sucks! Almost impossible to charge in Belize’s humidity! And several times needing cleaning at Apple store.

With war raging on the EU’s eastern flank, energy shortages spawned by the conflict, Turkey protesting the admission of Sweden and Finland to NATO, rising inflation, a falling Euro and hundreds of thousands of Ukrainian refugees to accommodate and support, I’m so glad EU regulators are focused on the one issue that matters: What style of power cable must Apple use on future iPhones sold in the EU. Why would Britain ever choose to leave this amalgamation of nations that has such an incredibly rational, well organized and appropriately focused central government? Forget military conflicts, rising prices, refugee challenges, energy shortages and the importance of the NATO alliance. Forcing Apple through regulation to change its charging cable is of the highest importance, right? Apple can never be trusted to figure out what works best for its customers. Of course not. That would be such an American thing to do…

Would there be anything to report on this planet if we didn’t have the phrase, ”…according to people with knowledge of the situation.”

“According to congress?” Or “…the EU Commission?” They rarely have “knowledge of the situation.”
