Wormy iPhone factory reopened Wednesday with skeleton crew

One shift of 120 workers has returned to a Foxconn factory that employed about 17,000.

From Reuters’ “Foxconn India’s iPhone plant restarts production after December protests” posted Wednesday:

Apple Inc. supplier Foxconn restarted production at its plant in southern India on Wednesday, a company official said, over three weeks after it was closed because of protests over workers falling sick.

The company official, speaking to Reuters on condition of anonymity, said the factory reopened with one shift and 120 workers, adding it would take over two months for the plant to produce at full capacity.

The plant, in the town of Sriperumbudur near the Tamil Nadu state capital of Chennai, employs about 17,000 people but was closed on Dec. 18 after 250 workers fell sick with food poisoning, sparking protests. Workers previously told Reuters the plant generally operates three shifts.

My take: One meal at a time.

  1. This story says a great deal about the India I know & love. I started traveling there to teach & learn in 1986 & returned 6 times over the next 10 years. 1st – It’s an electronics assembly plant, they don’t make foodstuffs. 2nd – Any other plant would close the company cafeteria & have workers bring meals in. Here meals are probably an employee benefit. 3rd – Food that some people can’t digest is called Indian food. I learned to subsist on boiled fresh vegetables, no salads, no street food, water I purified every morning. 4th – Workers in India will get upset & revolt for a wide range of offenses, especially if a truck hits a cow, wrong politician speaks, or just 1 of 100,000 religious rules are violated.

I heard a rumor from unnamed sources that the factory has hired “Wolfgang Puck” to take over the kitchen. Then another source who requested anonymity claimed that the company bought out a semisecret warehouse containing bazillions of MRE’s (“Meals Ready to Eat”) from the United States that were being stored in underground caves in the Roman Catacombs.

    I hate rumors!

If they’re eating MREs, suggest investing in laxatives…
