Davidson’s Tom Forte: It’s a mistake to shrug off Apple’s regulatory risks

There’s 3 risks, it seems to me: (1) legal penalty (let’s see what comes from Epic v Apple, decision due any day now, I hope.); (2) loss of income going foward (and that’s a function of how much income Apple gets now vs what Apple would get in the future); (3) reputational damage.

The big concern would be if Apple were treated uniquely by such laws or legal precedents going forward. Otherwise, a loss of store revenue would impact the industry as a whole.

Oh, the “don’t tread on me” nature of today’s app developer.

Let’s consider how the lot of them are splintered in their objectives. The millions of developers and apps and the billions of dollars in play.

    1) The Big Whales

    2) The Middle World

    3) The Also-Ran(s)

The Big Whales endeavor for the large dollar operation.

The Middle World keep the oceans flowing for their own perpetuation and usually at the benefit of their customers.

The Also-Ran loves the challenge of great software and the game of being a small cog in the machinery of it all and certainly doesn’t mind a nice profit. (Small business — sound familiar?)

Given the breadth and scope of it all, most developers probably fall in the latter two categories, are “just fine” with Apple’s self-inflicted 15% fee, have no interest whatsoever in running their own cash register LET ALONE their own costly and maintenance-laden backend.

Seem to me that the unwitting customer will once again somehow get spanked by too many mechanics trying to fix something that’s not broken.
