PEAR, not Apple, is the code name for Fisker-Foxconn’s U.S.-made electric car

From Bloomberg’s “Fisker Soars as EV Deal With Foxconn to Include U.S. Factory” posted Thursday:

Fisker Inc.’s existing agreement to develop an electric vehicle with Foxconn Technology Group will now include a factory in the U.S., the companies said in a statement Thursday.

The joint project — codenamed Project PEAR — is targeting a start of production in the U.S. by the fourth quarter of 2023. The companies said they’re considering multiple sites around the world to support eventual global manufacturing capacity of 250,000 units a year. The partners plan to unveil a prototype of their jointly developed car later this year.

Electric vehicles have risen in prominence in recent months, with everyone from established automakers like Geely to smartphone purveyor Xiaomi Corp. making big investments in the category. Foxconn has an EV platform that will be used to launch two light vehicles in the fourth quarter of this year, Chairman Young Liu said in February. The company has also inked a manufacturing deal with Chinese startup Byton Ltd. and been among a coterie of suppliers and assemblers linked with a potential Apple Inc. car.

My take: PEAR is said to be short for Personal Electric Automotive Revolution. Cute.

As acronyms go that expansion of “PEAR” sounds about as plausible as “Locally Integrated System Architecture”.

    Gawd!

One is only left hoping they didn’t have another company named after a fruit in mind when picking the name.

No matter the name. Bring it on — and the sooner, the better.

Hats off to them. Let’s get on to our EV future.

Agreed with “Let’s get on to our EV future.”

I actually had that discussion last night over adult beverages. I do dearly love both of the vehicles that I drive today, and both are internal combustion Engine (ICE) “premium unleaded” burners, but I am hopeful that within twenty years, a majority (even 66%) of vehicles on the road will be EVs, not ICEs.

Could the Pear logo issue have been a future peek slip. Apple could swallow Fisker, as a separate subsidiary without the slightest immodest burp. That Pear would have made a nicely complimentary logo. Production by Foxconn keeps it under the same umbrella from a Tech & Privacy standpoint. Apple Silicon. With chip production inhouse, how far could they be from devising (should they wish) self-driving hardware and software.
