Ming-Chi Kuo doubles down on a foldable Apple iPhone

Kuo predicts that within two years Apple will build 15-20 million units of a "must-have" device nobody is asking for.

From MacRumors "Kuo: Apple to Launch 8-Inch Foldable iPhone in 2023" posted Monday:

Apple is working to launch a foldable iPhone with an 8-inch QHD+ flexible OLED display in 2023, Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said today in a note to investors that was seen by MacRumors...

Kuo predicts that foldable smartphones will become a "must-have" for all major smartphone brands and will boost the next "super replacement cycle" for high-end models, and he believes Apple is well positioned to be the "biggest winner" in the foldable device trend. Apple will ship 15 to 20 million foldable iPhones in 2023, according to Kuo...

Kuo believes that the upcoming ‌iPhone‌ will adopt a silver nanowire touch solution for the device's display, which will create a "long-term competitive advantage" for Apple in the foldable device market. This display technology will be needed for future foldable devices that support more than a single fold.

My take: Someone is jerking Kuo's chain.

The next “super cycle” will occur when Apple starts shipping (2025 per licensing agreement) its on 5G radios installed in EVERYTHING: iPhones, iPads, MacBooks, iMacs, Air Pod Pros, Apple Watches, Air Tags, etc.

Another 4 years of 5G development could deliver on its coverage AND speed promise, and launch of an Apple branded EV.

      upvoted, and yes:

My mantra: 5G; 5 Years of upgrades across the board.

Apple’s LTE Watch achieve geosynchronous orbit. 5G AirTags may as well, leaving the rest as bottle rockets.

“…. At present, the product position of foldable smartphones is mainly to integrate the smartphone and tablet. But we believe that the foldable smartphone is only one of the applications of the foldable design. We predict that foldable devices will blur the product segmentations between smartphones, tablets, and laptops in the future. With its cross-product ecosystems and hardware design advantages, Apple will be the biggest winner in the new foldable device trend.”

We denote our beliefs of the new, unique & innovative products Apple has in its pipeline. The foldable smartphone is one such device. I am confident it is on the horizon. I also am certain that Apple’s foldable smartphone will be a disrupter of current smartphones, especially in the developing & emerging world countries where discretionary monies are limited but the need for a single device in conducting business, social media, gaming & entertainment is demanding. The foldable smartphone becomes the phone, the iPad & laptop for many in emerging markets. It will start slowly, but once its powerful legs are unleashed it will move swiftly to usurp today’s smartphones. Apple will have a hit product & Apple’s long term investors will benefit handsomely.

I always wonder if information from MIng-Chi Kuo such as this report has value in understanding Apple and future product releases. More often I feel the information is released to depress current product enthusiasm because something else is coming out in the future which might be better. An example is talking about Iphone features for the next model when the newest model has just been released. Also I am skeptical when unit numbers are discussed on an unreleased product in a couple of years. Sometimes I think who cares. Other times the info provided about features or pricing for new and updated products is a bit more useful. Although it does sometimes spoil the surprise.
