It’s not just ‘scale and cash’, but also a strong sense of ‘supply chain management’ that applies that cash wisely. In part this goes back to Jobs’ concentration on ‘a few products’.

Next up will be the political frenzy from the Senatorial Apple haters who will use this supply chain constriction to attack Apple as being too large and impermissibly controlling computer chips, which in turn impacts national security.

If Intel hadn’t been so tied to an inferior OS (demanding x86 architecture) there would be no threat potential to our national security.

Processors should lead the technology evolution as the OS can only do what the processor allows. Intel chose to follow the OS, and we all know that MSFT was scared to death of change.

Isn’t Google doing its own chips for Android? It could well be that the wave of the future is integrated HW/system SW design. That has substantial technical advantages but also problems for single company control (i.e. potential monopoly.)

I believe Google’s chips are for their data centers and not for Android OS.

@Roger, rumors are that Google is designing chips for its own Pixel smartphones and Chromebooks, partly to reduce dependence on Qualcomm. They would join other Google chips for machine learning, computational photography, and other uses. Samsung is helping / consulting on design and will be the 5nM fab for any Google Chips. Whether they will design and build any server chips has not yet surfaced.

            • Google is designing AI chips that are designing new types of microchips. While this seems new I remember an Intel architect declaring the actual design of all new microchips had to be given over to computers. That was at least 10 years ago. The terrain of today’s SoC is too small and too vast for humans to compete with robots. In Google’s case one must wonder what an autonomous AI designer might come up with! Organic chips, that grow more capacity, along with organic memory, displayed on an OLED.
