Trillionaires: Apple, Amazon, Microsoft and now Google

The fourth horseman of tech.

From Daisuke Wakabayashi’s “Google Reaches $1 Trillion in Value, Even as It Faces New Tests” in Friday’s New York Times.

For all the changes facing Google, one constant has remained: It is essentially the sole proprietor of the internet’s most lucrative business. Google search is the on-ramp to much of the internet, and placing advertising next to key search terms is a necessity for most businesses, who risk forgoing traffic to a competitor.

My take: One fifth of the way into the 21st century, this is where the cash flows.

“…. Activist employees have complained that Google is cracking down on workers who speak out on issues such as the company’s treatment of sexual harassment or working with the American military on technology that could be used to improve weapons.”

Bill Clinton in his run for the White House promised to reinvent government and assigned the task to Al Gore after the two assumed office. Through an EO Clinton signed in 1993, federal government Labor-management Partnerships were created throughout the federal system targeted to bring private sector efficiency into a more results oriented federal bureaucracy. What can be done through signing an EO can easily be undone by a subsequent president signing another EO, which George W Bush subsequently did on assuming office. What we spent eight years establishing George W undid it all with a stroke of his pen.

I participated in the above process of setting up the Labor-management Partnership Councils. I understand the role of Unions in working with management. That role is to address employees’ working conditions. The Labor-management process during the Clinton administration gave bargaining unit employees a formidable voice through Union representatives working with senior executive government managers.

My experience has found that in industrialized nations Unions have been the most powerful force in building social protections, not just for their own members but for all of society. Workers should have safe working environments and be treated in a fair and equitable manner when it comes to choice job assignments, opportunities for promotions, equal pay and career advancements. Labor unions give greater bargaining power to workers to reach these objectives. So, Google workers do have a voice in demanding that management ensure workers have safe working environment free of sexual harassment. Workers do not, though, have a right to dictate with whom management decides legally to do business.

Google employees who protest management’s decision to do business with the US military or with China have the freedom to leave the company, and should do so. I know of no Union that ever will dictate to management (or to the Employer) terms of the company’s business strategy.

    A bridge too far.

I do agree workers (represented by a union or not) should not try to “dictate” business strategy. (does this not carry over to “owners” as well actually? management can be replaced if owners don’t like their strategy, or owners can sell their stock).
However, the actual issue (as I understand in this case, and otherwise) is transparency of what the business strategy is (in general, if not with respect to specifics) and whether employees have the right to publicly comment if they disagree. Google seems to object to both of these with respect to employees. I tend to think transparency and employees having a right to speak out are generally good for a company. Google does not want to let it be known they are working with the government or China; they just need to defend it, not suppress comment on it.
