Meet Joshua Cohen, Apple University’s resident philosopher (podcast)

A rare peek into the black hole where some of academia’s best and brightest disappear to make a dent in the universe.

What is Apple University? And how did it persuade a distinguished intellectual like Professor Cohen (Yale, Harvard, MIT, Stanford) to join its full-time faculty and deliver lectures to Apple executives on such esoterica as the discovery of the Higgs boson and Glenn Gould’s recordings of Bach’s Goldberg Variations?

I caught up with Prof. Cohen as he was packing for Toronto where the Glenn Gould Foundation has invited him to share with the public two of his “extraordinary” Apple talks:

  • Wednesday Sept. 25: Gould’s Variations & the Human Qualities that Foster Remarkable Creativity
  • Thursday Sept. 26: Central Park: A Design for Democracy

Times, venues, ticket information here. Not in Toronto? Livestream the lectures here.

Podcast below and on iTunes here.

My take: Quite a guy. I can see why Apple snagged him.

Nice interview; Many thanks Philip. You came to the rescue with a moments notice. Joshua Cohen’s presentations are amazing. Anyone of your readers who wants to understand the why and the how of Apple (and the future of business, IMHO) will do well to sign-on Wednesday and Thursday night for the presentations.

Better yet folks, fly to Toronto to attend the live events; for a mere $40 (CAN$ at that) you will be a part of a select group, since few local people know it … (It seems the only thing that matters to the local media right now is “blackface”, the upcoming federal election and the future of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.)

Sometimes it’s right there in front of us. We feel it deeply. Yet, we need often to be reminded what is distinctive about it. It could be anything, but let’s just use Central Park as an example. Often we focus on what the targeted design was for, but we neglect to celebrate what creative folk who came up with the vision and idea could do, and did! It’s all about creativity and how those who come up with the vision and idea affect for better the lives of others.
