Apple is on a tear

The sub text, “Apple overtakes Spotify”, is the real headline.

Remember how everyone said Apple blew it in the shift to streaming music? Or how they were late with 3G or 4G and now will be late with 5G? And how the original content announced on March 25th won’t crush Netflix tomorrow?

Apple is Godzilla hiding in plain sight. Of the installed base of 900M iPhone, most likely only 1/2 really use the iPhone fully and pay for wireless data. But that is the majority, or more, of the world’s middle class. Hence App Store revenue is 2X Google Play and Apple email clients are nearly 1/2 the users of Google’s email server. We could go on.

All the small items, or future items, which includes Apple Pay, Apple in healthcare (future), AR, games, magazines in News+, original content etc. will grow for a decade or more. We cannot predict, or model the growth, but it will significant. Just one category, Apple Pay, shows this. Over the last 2 years the number of places that accept Apple Pay increased steadily in my ad hoc sampling.

While I share your optimism, Fred, and Apple has been executing really well in services lately for sure, let’s not forget about such fails as Ping, MobileMe, the gold WATCH and maybe the HomePod (in that it’s relatively late to market, high-priced and aimed at a niche market). Apple doesn’t always get it right the first time, but the team sure is relentless in their pursuit of customer sat. Here’s to hoping Apple TV+, etc. is a hit from day one.

In my view, until Spotify can figure out a way to create sustainable profitability to fund continued innovation for the benefit of artists and consumers there is no real comparison or contest.
