Google’s 360-degree ride to the uncanny valley (video)

What they’re saying on YouTube about the Google Assistant 360° Tour at CES 2019:

  • Jamie Simon: Fantastic
  • Leonid Romanov: Creepy
  • marsgodofwarx:  I wanna meet that dad.
  • The Squeegee: Anyone else find this… disturbing?
  • RideAllNight: That was simply awesome. Hopefully this becomes a permanent installation somewhere.
  • mark hughes:  I really thought this was a parody for at least a couple of minutes. I can’t believe anyone seriously thought this would be a good idea

Cue the video (direction button is live):

My take: You can thank Ben Thompson for recommending the virtual version of what is, at CES, an actual ride. Thompson ($) kind of liked it. John Gruber did not.

F(insert expletive) that was a disturbing video! To me, that was a nightmarish view of a “day in the life.” Had my heart racing and my head spinning by the end, with a touch of anger brewing. (Yeah, that’s probably too much info.)

Brought me back to the days when I was caught on the corporate hamster wheel until, thankfully, a mid-life crisis slapped me on the back of the head, knocked some sense into me and gave me the incentive I needed to do things my way.

If someone’s life pace is anything like the video portrays, might I suggest some reflection is in order. If necessary, seek help … elsewhere than from Google Assistant

    Peace and serenity rule!

Watched it, put my iPad down, had a cup of coffee, watched it again, continued to think it was dumb and somewhat visually disorienting, but the technology that created it was awesome.

I do hope VR can be implemented better than this. I do not view my environment through a fish eye lens on a tracked ride.
