Apple Watch is No. 1 again

In the wearable ecosystem race, Huawei is No. 2, Samsung is No. 3, and Google is fading fast.

From a Canalys media alert posted early Tuesday:

Apple retook the lead in the wearable band market in [calendar] Q3 2017, with shipments of 3.9 million. It posted its strongest quarter so far in 2017, thanks to the release of the Apple Watch Series 3.

Samsung, Apple and Huawei, the top three smartphone vendors by volume in Q3 2017, have positioned smartwatches to complement their premium smartphones…  “Apple and Samsung are increasing user stickiness and brand loyalty by adopting an ecosystem strategy,” said Canalys Research Analyst Mo Jia.

My take: Where’s Google? Look: According to Canalys, one in seven iPhone 7/8 buyers bought the matching smartwatch. Half as many Huawei customers did the same. It’s one in 23 for Samsung. Android Wear, meanwhile, is falling by the wayside.

Samsung and Huawei watches are not water proof – not for swimming. Samsung’s runs Tizen. Huawei’s runs Android’s wearable OS, but not Google’s very latest.

Apple Watch remains far more attractive for wearable App developers – one OS, one set of developer tools, one App Store, and the largest installed base.
