Smuggling iPhones into India

From “10 million rupee worth of iPhone caught at Hyderabad airport” posted Thursday in the Indian Express:

As many as 80 iPhones, worth over (U.S. $135,000), were seized by Customs officials at the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport in Hyderabad on Thursday. The officials arrested two passengers to whom the checked-in luggage belonged and another person involved in the smuggling attempt.

The two passengers had arrived from Sharjah on Wednesday by Air Arabia flight G9 458. According to an official statement, the passengers were detained when they tried to leave their baggage near the luggage belt and flee. The officials upon noticing this nabbed them to check their baggage and found as many as 80 iPhones concealed inside.

The accused persons are involved in the organized smuggling of dutiable goods in commercial quantity, said a statement. “The smuggled goods valued at Rs 10,065,000 were seized under the provisions of the Customs Act, 1962. Further, Rs 4,00,000 in cash was also seized from one of the above persons under the provisions of the Customs Act, 1962. Further investigation is under progress.”

My take: Hyderabad is no Hong Kong, but with iPhone sales growing and import duties set at 15%, it could be headed that way.

I thought Apple can manufacture iPhones in India now. Or is it only certain models?

Klobuchar, Cicilline, Khan, and Vestager will probably weigh in and all hold press conferences saying this is just further proof of Apple’s antitrust monopoly with iPhones and its iOS. Nobody was caught smuggling Fortnight into the country, and obviously this was all the result of Apple’s iron fisted control over their Berlin Wall ecosystem of “Stockholm Syndrome” users.

As far as I’m concerned the jury on Khan is still out. She doesn’t strike me as a pack (of idiots) follower.

Just as she thought the DOJ got it wrong with Amazon, she could feel that Apple’s strength/dominance comes from giving its customers what they want, and does not come from pricing that is outside the industry norm.

While the jury is still out, by appointing a person with minuscule job experience and only 32 to head an agency, that has puppet master written all over it. Time will tell. However, based on what I’ve seen, someone else will be pulling her strings. I’ve seen this movie before.
