The Dediu-Munster tapes: No. 3 Why Apple trades like a dying steel mill

Gene Munster blames the consensus. Horace Dediu blames Steve Jobs.

This is the third of eight video clips extracted from a conference recorded live on Oct. 4, 2019 using a beta version of Teooh, an avatar-based virtual event platform backed by Munster’s Loup Ventures.

My take: It not easy for a hit-driven business to change its business model.

Folks just don’t understand Apple’s hardware biz. Each device represents massive investments in the chip design, and all the software from firmware through to the many SDK’s. Historically most HW companies have never had the cash, the talent and the vision to sustain a HW biz. The biggest proof is Apple Watch crushing the next category, wearables. There is no, as in Zero, precedent for a HW company succeeding in the next generation (smaller) HW platform. IBM failed in mini’s and even PCs eventually. All the server company are history – it’s now Cloud.

While today, AirPod is just a cool bauble, the technology inside is the future.
